Courtney founded Lowcountry Academic Consulting, LLC after serving much of her life in public service through both education and politics. At the request of a teacher, she began tutoring classmates in middle school which soon expanded into an after-school business. By college, tutoring and mentoring had become routine in her life. She was selected as the Peer Mentor of the Year through the ROARs Scholars program in 2015. Upon graduation, she continued using this unique approach to learning in order to help others, both on a professional and volunteer basis. Her passion for improving education continued as she was recruited to be a high school math teacher by the highly selective Teach for America program (AmeriCorps), where she fought to end educational inequity and helped to shape the minds of future leaders in both Mississippi and South Carolina.
In addition to her work in education, Courtney previously served in the Finance Department for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Department of Defense), as the Social Media Coordinator for a U.S. Senator, and as the Campaign Manager during a Charleston County Council election.
Courtney was the Valedictorian of her high school class. She attended the College of Charleston, where she graduated cum laude with Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Political Science and Theater, and minors in International Studies and Physics. She also earned her Global Master's in Business Administration (with a Finance focus) from the college.
Despite her achievements, Courtney's health declined rapidly while in high school. She not only had to fight to stay alive, but she had to fight to live again. She experienced first-hand what it's like to feel defeated by one's own body as she felt her lifelong dreams of going to college, and having a meaningful career slipping away. When doctors couldn't offer her hope - she turned to family and friends for support, and then re-examined her new reality. She constantly searched to find ways to manage her condition so it would become a learning curve instead of the barrier she had previously seen it as. Today, she hopes Lowcountry Academic Consulting, LLC can help others overcome the obstacles in their life and be the resource she could never find.
Madelyn Lawrence was involved every step of the way in helping Courtney through her challenges both before and after the age of 18. She actively searched for and has spent years compiling information and resources to help promote her daughter’s success in overcoming her disabilities. She knows first-hand what it is like to have a child both before and after a disability and the effects these challenges can take on both the student and family - emotionally, financially, academically, etc. With over a decade’s worth of experience at helping her own daughter and sharing tips with other parents, her unique perspective allows her to speak from that supportive role that is so vital to a student’s success.
Margaret Zahrowski has over 20 years of experience in the hiring profession. Most notably, she spent a great deal of her career specifically working to hire and train VR clients. Her years of experience and familiarity with Vocational Rehabilitation’s services and clients make her unparalleled at offering advice to those with disabilities preparing for a career.
In addition to this team, Lowcountry Academic Consulting, LLC also has access to an array of other experienced teachers and business professionals (many with first and/or second-hand experience of disabilities) who are able to offer additional insight and assistance as needed.
